Introducing Monthly Lifestyle Challenges

By | Motivation | No Comments

Hello Athletes,

I hope you are well. Does it not feel warm today? I am loving it. By the way, have you signed up for the Open? Sign up now!

This blog post is to highlight the journey of developing lifelong habits. We are so happy and proud of all of the athletes who continue to make good eating choices. I know groups of athletes have taken the initiative to do Paleo Challenges and encourage each other to make smart eating decisions. We eat to perform, right?Your coaches love to see your commitment to health and fitness.   Keep it up!

This year we want to intentionally challenge you on different levels because it is so much more than food. We plan to release a monthly challenge to make sure we are making those life longs changes in our fitness journey.  Are you ready for the January’s challenge?

January’s challenge comes directly from the Original CrossFitter, CEO and Founder of CrossFit; Coach Greg Glassman. He put out this challenge last November during a lecture at Harvard Divinity School.

Fitness affects other parts of your life. Lets prove it!

  1. Make a list of all the things that you want to be better at…
  2. No one else is going to read it. So do not be shy.
  3. Seal it and save it in a place that you will remember.
  4. Do CrossFit consistently at least 3 times a week for 6 months.
  5. Then go back to the list and see all the things that you have improved at.
  6. If you want to inspire others, feel free to share it.

You have until the end of the month to do the challenge. Make sure you ask at least one athlete if they did the challenge. Yes, because accountability is what we all need to accomplish our goals.

Meet the King of the Hill for January 2016

By | Announcements | No Comments

The King of the Hill is Ziyad Hopkins. Ziyad has been with us for about 4 months. But he has quickly became a fan favorite and a role model on the 6am crew. I am sure Daniel, Jake and Fitz love competing against him. We cannot mention Ziyad without his awesome wife and CrossFit partner Michele (one L). They are truly a dynamic duo in the gym. Keep reading to learn more about him.

What brought you to COTH?

I was a member of CrossFit Boston when it was located on Terrace Street. I joined back in summer of 2008.  I continued with them when they moved to Allston/Brighton and then some time later COTH opened.  My wife started coming to COTH and I joined.  Love having a positive business in the neighborhood— we live a few minutes away.

What drew you to CrossFit?

Laziness.  Really.  I am in awe of people who can work out on their own.  I love being a part of a fun, supportive group with a great Coach leading the way.  It’s wonderful to be able to trust the overall CrossFit approach.  It just works.

What keeps you coming back to COTH?

The coaches and the regular 6 a.m. crew. And it is great to workout with my wife— especially when the alarm clock goes off at 5:30 am!

Biggest improvements/struggles with CrossFit?

With the box so close to my house, being able to go 4 to 5 times a week has been great— I have seen real improvements not only in CrossFit, but also just helping to regulate my days and weeks.  And for some reason (hope I’m not jinxing it!) my double-unders have been great the last few WODs.  It took a long time, so be patient if you ‘re working on them (and somehow they’re easier when you’re tired…).  Overhead squats/snatches— my mobility needs work.  I hate wall balls, but I know they’re good for me, so I do them.

If you could create your own WOD, what movements would you use?

These days, double-unders!  In warmer weather, I like the 400 meter runs (yes, I do) mixed in with body weight (pull ups, push ups, sit-ups, squats).  Helen is my favorite “girl” WOD.  Favorite Olympic movement is the clean/clean & jerk.

Meat head nickname (with explanation)?

Anything with a “Z” in it…well almost anything…because I’ve got a “Z” name and who doesn’t love the last letter from the alphabet?

2016 Social Event Calendar for COTH

By | Announcements | No Comments

Hello athletes,

At CrossFit on the Hill we are about transforming the community we serve. Not only through exercise, nutrition and coaching but we are a strong community. This will become a place that you love to hang out at and spend time with your new friends! We foster this environment by having events where we come together to share stories, hang out and positively influence each other.  We invite all athletes and friends. Ask your coach about the details of an upcoming event and we will surely fill you in with the details.

January 30th, 2016 (COTH Potluck) – Bring your favorite Paleo dish and recipes to share with the community. Some of you are Paleo Cook Experts and we want you to share that with others athletes who want to change their eating habits. We will celebrate the gathering after the 11am class.

February 13th, 2016 (Bring a Friend WOD) – Saturday WODs are special to  us because we get to share the reps and hard work with a partner. Why not share the fitness benefits with someone you love outside of the Box. Bring a friend, neighbor or family member. Their 1st visit is free.

February 20th, 2016 (Ladies, Laugh and Lift Repeat) – Calling all COTH ladies!!! We will be hosting a time of lifting, laughing and sangria/mimosa/wine consuming. Come ready to have fun, make new friends and lift some weight. BYOB.

March 26th, 2016 (End of CrossFit Open WOD Party) – Lets get together to cheer, high five and recover from the Open WODs. We will be doing 16.5 on this day and hang out afterwards. Bring your favorite dish, beverage and cheerleader to finish the Open with a bang!

TBD (4th Annual Hiking Trip)  Historically, one of the favorite events of the year. You don’t want to miss it.  Join us for a day of hiking, eating and drinking in the White Mountains of NH.

Monday 30th, 2016 (Memorial Day/Murph BBQ) – We hope it is 80 degrees that day so we can enjoy a nice BBQ after we finish Murph. Murph is a hero WOD and it is a hard workout but when you do it with a bunch of friends. It is EPIC.
