Meet the King of the Hill for February 2018!

By | Announcements, Community, Featured | No Comments

NO REP! That’s typically what you hear when you attend a class with this months royalty, Colin. However, to be fair, he does adjust and still manages to take tops on the leader board, after making the corrections. Now imagine how many reps he would have had if he went below parallel from the beginning!

All jokes aside, the first day Colin came into COTH for his trial class, he came right to us and said, “I love this! Here’s my card, take my money”. There isn’t a more competitive athlete at our gym and we’re now pleased to call him our King of the Hill!

Read more about Colin below!

What drew you to CrossFit?

If anyone has spent more than 5 minutes working out with me, I can be a bit competitive. I wanted the competition of my glory days and the ability to counterbalance the beer I consume during the week.

What keeps you coming back to COTH?

100% the people. Tewfik went and broke my heart, but Dan, Mike, Fitz, and Sam have more than filled the void. I also like the fact that we are all in this broken dilapidated building together, sweating it out.

Biggest improvements/struggles with CrossFit?

I am absolutely terrible at HSPU (I throw the ABMAT like a child when I’m getting lapped), T2B & PU (Shoulders aren’t great), and DU (Not the most coordinated).

Meat head nickname (with explanation)?

Dan Riviello decided “No Rep Mackitkatachan”. I feel like that is pretty self explanatory.

What type of workouts do you like (AMRAP, For time, EMOTM, etc)?

For Time

Do you like long, medium, or short workouts?

Name a few of your favorite movements.

Hang cleans, wall balls, running, push press.

Do you enjoy low reps/ high weight or high reps/ low weight?

Low reps high weight!

Anything else you’d like to see in your workout?

I want to be a workout entirely composed of the things I am WORST at. I want an AMRAP of HSPU, T2B, PU, and DU. You can add a muscle up in there at the end to make it more not my workout.

Meet the Queen of the Hill for January 2018!

By | Announcements, Community, Featured | No Comments

She’s never late, she’s just early for tomorrow 😉. Meet our new Queen of the Hill, Melissa! Mel has probably performed the most burpees in our box from being late to class so many times. It’s no wonder why she likes them. She still shows up and puts in hard work! Congrats Mel!

Read more about our new Queen below and be on the look out for her WOD (which may or may not include burpees)!

What drew you to CrossFit?

I was ready for some change in my workout. Also, I had watched the Crossfit games and wanted biceps and abs.

What keeps you coming back to COTH?

It’s close to work, but mainly for the friends and camaraderie. Also, lifting heavy things is fun.

Biggest improvements/struggles with CrossFit?

Being able to lift heavier then I ever had prior

Meat head nickname (with explanation)?

I don’t have one 🙁

What type of workouts do you like (AMRAP, For time, EMOTM, etc)?

AMRAP’s and For Time’s

Do you like long, medium, or short workouts?

Short or medium. Long ones are just dreadful.

Name a few of your favorite movements.

Deadlifts, burpees and box jumps!

Do you enjoy low reps/ high weight or high reps/ low weight?

Low reps and bring on the weights!

Anything else you’d like to see in your workout?

Maybe single unders just to throw people off, or cleans? But NO wall balls!

Roll out the red velvet carpets, there’s a new King in town and his name is… (Drum roll please)… Brendan Jeffers! Brendan’s hard work at COTH has finally paid off as he’s been rewarded with the ultimate honor of being our King of the Hill. I know he shed a few tears after we notified him of the honor, but he won’t admit it.

Read more about our new King below and be on the look out for his WOD!

What drew you to CrossFit?

  • Getting bored of coming up with my own workouts in the gym
  • Having good experiences in group fitness classes in the past
  • Seeing how much fun and how great of a workout others were getting out of Crossfit!

What keeps you coming back to COTH?

  • The guarantee of a great workout
  • The progress that I make in the gym
  • The people!

Biggest improvements/struggles with CrossFit?

Meet the Queen of the Hill for November 2017!

By | Announcements, Community, Featured | No Comments

Ok you sweaty peasants, bow down for our new Queen Hillary Holmes, November’s Queen of the Hill! Since Hillary joined us in April, she’s been one of our most consistent and hard working members! She also just finished competing in her first CrossFit competition, our in-house throw down, to which she placed second in the Women’s RX division! Hillary is one of the most approachable people in our community and is always willing to offer advise, make you her friend or tame teenagers (*cough Felix *cough). She’s also the dog mom to Griff, who’s pretty awesome!

Read more about our new Queen below and be on the look out for her WOD!

What drew you to CrossFit?
I was always a B-team/JV kid growing up – I tried hard and loved team sports but I was never going to be an all-star. But Crossfit gives you the best of both worlds – I get to work hard with friends and encouragement like a team sport, but the daily goal is to be better than I was the day before.

What keeps you coming back to COTH?
I love the community! I was new to Boston and y’all embraced me and made this place feel like home very quickly.

Biggest improvements/struggles with CrossFit?
My biggest struggle is always the mental game. One of my friends who really encouraged me to try CrossFit gave me some good advice: It’s not about your feelings. I don’t always feel like showing up or pushing through, but if it’s not about my feelings, then that doesn’t matter. That little nugget has definitely pushed me.

Meat head nickname (with explanation)?
Uhh…we’ll work on it.

What type of workouts do you like (AMRAP, For time, EMOTM, etc)?
For time! I like to be able to plan how I’m going to split it up and that’s a lot harder to do with AMRAPs.

King of the Hill - October 2017

Meet the King of the Hill for October 2017!

By | Announcements, Community, Featured | No Comments

There’s new royalty in town. We’ve crowned Mike Warburton as October’s King of the Hill! Mike consistently attends 6am classes, constantly challenges himself, and has seen tremendous improvements in his performance. Look out for his WOD this month, which we can only assume will light your quads on fire!

Read more about our new King below!

What drew you to CrossFit?
DAN RIVIELLO (he’d probably kill me if I didn’t say that..). But really, I had grown stagnant with my workouts and I had stopped progressing and pushing myself. I needed a new challenge and something I wouldn’t get bored with right away — I am so happy I did try it out and have never looked back since!

What keeps you coming back to COTH?
The coaches and community make it feel like a real family here. I’m also the type of person that needs to be pushed out of my comfort zone in order to get better and there is tons friendly competition and coaches here that do that.

Biggest Improvements/Struggles with CrossFit?
My biggest improvements since I’ve joined are definitely gymnastic movements and making form a priority overall. Anyone who knows me will tell you my biggest struggle — two words— DOUBLE UNDERS. And I have the marks on my arms and legs to prove it 🙂

Meathead Nickname?
Never really had one — friends in college used to call me Wooba which I guess is a play on my last name.. so there’s that.

Meet the Queen of the Hill for September 2017!

By | Announcements, Community, Featured | No Comments

Bow dow to your newest, fairest ruler of the land/the hill for September – 2017, Caitlin Cashner!

Read more about our new queen below!

What drew you to CrossFit?
The variety of the workouts really appealed to me, something different everyday. Also, it’s really close to my house 🙂

What keeps you coming back to COTH?
The community at Crossfit on the hill is so welcoming. Everyone is genuine, happy, and has a positive attitude. It really helps motivate me and keeps me coming back!

Biggest improvements/struggles with CrossFit?
Double unders and pull-ups, ugggghhhhh…

I do think I’ve definitely improved in all of the different weightlifting movements, but as I’d never done them before, I certainly had no where to go but up!

Meat head nickname (with explanation)?
I’m the oldest of four kids and all of us have names that start with C. So my brothers call me “Big C.” Is that a meathead nickname? All of us have also been called “cashmoney” at some point, since our last name is Cashner.

What type of workouts do you like (AMRAP, For time, EMOTM, etc)?
I tend to like the for time workouts or EMOTM, I think I push myself harder for those.

Do you like long, medium, or short workouts?
I like short or long, I feel like mediums are always the biggest killers.

Name a few of your favorite movements.
Situps, Singleunders :), power cleans, farmer’s walks, box jumps

Do you enjoy low reps/ high weight or high reps/ low weight?
high reps/low weight

Meet Our New Coaches!

By | Announcements, Community | No Comments

Hey Cothletes! Our staff is growing and we have two new fresh faces who will be guiding you through your fitness journey! We are so pumped to be welcoming Brenton Cruisinberry and Nicholas Landiak to our coaching team! Be sure to say hello and introduce yourself next time you take their class!!

Here is some more information about our amazing new coaches!

Name: Brenton Crusinberry

Age: 22

Hometown: I grew up in Corona, CA but was stationed in Hawaii the past 3 years.

Why/how did you get started with CrossFit?: I started Crossfit while I was in the military to train for combat schools I was sent to. My desire to coach Crossfit also came from the military because I was put in the role of getting people in shape that did not meet the standard of either physical fitness and or body fat percentage. I enjoyed giving people knowledge on healthier lifestyle and movements as well as helping them achieve their own personal goals which helped translate over to Crossfit.

Favorite Workout/Crossfit movement: Any long grueling workout that makes you have to come up with a strategy as far as pacing.

Least Favorite Crossfit movement: I hate thrusters more then anything.

Favorite Cheat Meal: A big milkshake will do the trick.

Secret Talents: Sadly no

Want to see Brenton’s coaching skills in action? Join him for one of his 11:00am classes on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Can’t take a day off from work? No worries, he’ll be coaching a partner workout class on Saturday, September 2nd so mark your calendars!

Name: Nicholas Landiack

Nick likes a lot of things; team sports, fitness, coaching, hitting goals, laughter to name a few. He began his coaching journey over a decade ago in the water polo and aquatics strength training world. Early in 2013 he found CrossFit and found it the perfect fit for his competitive nature and desire for a team-oriented environment.

Nick is a Level 2 CrossFit Certified coach with a background in water polo, playing from his youth through the collegiate level at Penn State. He enjoys seeing his members learn new movements, master old ones, and exceed their expectations and goals.

Favorite Crossfit movement: Lunges and anything involving gymnastics

Least Favorite Crossfit movement: Anything that involves front rack stuff (specifically front squats)

Favorite cheat meal: Rubarb pie (but it has to be momma Landiack’s recipe!)

Secret talents: I can hold my breath for a long time! My PR is about two minutes.

You can find Nick coaching classes on Thursday nights at 5:30 and 7:00pm.

Joe Laviano, King of the Hill for July, 2017

Meet the King of the Hill for July 2017!

By | Announcements, Community, Featured, Motivation, Success Stories | No Comments

Sound the horns! Ladies and gents, we’re pleased to announce to you the King of the Hill for July – 2017, Joe Laviano!

Making Joe the King is long overdue. Joe began his Crossfit journey with us a few years ago with his girlfriend — another beloved lady workhorse of our community — Emily. Ever since then, his hard work and commitment to learning has paid off as he’s made significant strides at COTH. Joe is one of the few people we know that can inhale a chipotle burrito for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and still stay fit!

Keep reading to learn more about the new King!

What drew you to CrossFit?
I’ve always wanted to try Crossfit, but was super skeptical and never pulled the trigger. My girlfriend (and former COTH queen) Emily brought me to the COTH Christmas party in 2015; I was instantly hooked, she got me a trial membership as a gift, and I’ve been stuck here ever since!

What keeps you coming back to COTH?
For starters, I’m insanely competitive and love beating my old times (and Josh) day after day. The progress I’ve made in a year alone has allowed me to #BeBetter and always come back for more. Above all that, though, COTH has some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met in my life. Everyone’s energy fuels me to push through every workout and have a ton of fun along the way. I’ll even have the pleasure of moving in with two fellow COTHletes in September!

Biggest improvements/struggles with CrossFit?
I’m a big fan of the more technical movements, so that’s where I think I’ve seen most of my improvement. My clean and snatch have both DOUBLED since I’ve started here, and I’m always working on new skills (double unders, handstand walks, muscle-ups) and getting better every day.

I’ll keep my struggles to three words: WALLBALLS, WALLBALLS, WALLBALLS.

If you could create your own WOD, what movements would you use?
My favorite workouts are either short & heavy barbell movements or longer bodyweight AMRAPs. My wildest dreams revolve around a 20 minute HSPU/Bar Muscle Up/Burpee workout, but also wouldn’t mind a barbell complex or something similar.

Meat head nickname (with explanation)?
I force all my partners on Saturday workouts to go by “Burpees and Burritos” on the board, even though they both apply to just me. I’m always in the market for a new nickname, though, so I’m up for any suggestions.

Partner Challenge – WODs 1 & 2 Announced!

By | Announcements, Community, Competition | No Comments

Hi folks,

Tonight we’re announcing two of the five challenges.  Stay tuned, as we will announce a new challenge every day over the course of the next three days. We’ll kick off the first challenge by throwing it back to last year’s finals cash-in. Doesn’t look like much? Don’t let her fool ya … she’s been around the block and she’s a real heart breaker.

Our second challenge is a two part beast. A balancing act of strength and stamina.

Standards and details for each challenge are below. While you are not being judged for standards, a coach must be present for each attempt. We trust that all will play fair, abide by the honor system, and score as accurately as possible.

Have a go at it and best of luck to ya’ll!

AMRAP 5 min

500m row

ME Burpee to plate

Partner A will perform a 500m row while partner B performs ME burpee-to-plate, then switch. If partner B finishes 500m before time expires, both partners can perform ME b2p simultaneously.

-Score is total b2p

-b2p must be front facing

-Rowers must be reset after row 1 ends

2a.1RM Backsquat total (10min cap) then…

2b. 2 min ME burpee floor to bar touches

Athletes have 10 min to establish a 1RM back squat total. Immediately after, both partners will simultaneously perform ME burpee F2B touches.

-Squat MUST break parallel

-Two separate scores 2a. Total #’s 2b. Total reps

-Burpees – chest must touch floor

-Bar touch is 6” above finger tips.

-If you’re of Yao Ming stature, have a chat with a coach for troubleshooting.

On The Hill Rowing Team

By | Announcements, Community | No Comments

Hey COTH-letes! Coach Carmen here!

If any of you follow me on the social medias or attend my classes, you may already know that this past weekend I spent two incredible days at Community Rowing Inc (CRI) on the Charles River (re)learning how to row and playing around on the erg! I know, I know- most of you dread rowing workouts, but rowing in a REAL racing shell with a team of seven of your friends on the infamous Charles is NOTHING like sitting on an erg rowing a 2k in the box. Even Spencer Hendel (6-times Crossfit Games Athlete) came to learn to row!

CRI has a program called the Charles River Rowing League (CRRL) where groups of people who don’t have rowing experience get together for an amazing six weeks to learn to row in an 8 person boat. On The Hill Rowing team will practice once a week for six weeks. In week 6 every team in the League gets together for a cookout and race for a medal (and of course, bragging rights!).

Here’s a quick link about what it’s like to be a part of the CRRL:

Sunsets Almost Always Guaranteed!

When: First practice is on Wednesday August 10th (We can change practice nights to Thursdays instead if it works for the majority!)

Where: CRI in Brighton, Ma (I can help and car pool to bring four people!)

Time: Wednesdays (or Thursdays) 6:45pm-8:15pm

Cost: $192/person for 6 practices + 1 race and BBQ. (Regular cost $240, but because we’re special, we get a little discount)

If you’re hesitant on cost, think about it this way: When else will you have the opportunity to row out of the nation’s most internationally recognized rowing club!! 9 total hours of coaching from a Master Coach comes out to be a little more than $21/hr. ALSO, I heard a rumor that Crossfit JP was planning on joining, we can we totally kick their asses ON and OFF the water. Amirite? *insert hair flip emoji here*

Every team that competes will have a chance to win the Charles River Rowing League Trophy. This prestigious cup is won by the fastest Charles River Rowing League team each year at the CRI Fall Classic Regatta in September. Teams can train together from one to three sessions throughout the year to sharpen their rowing skills and teamwork.

Here is our team page:

If you’re truly interested, please send me a message (facebook, email, text) or talk to me after class so I can have a head count BEFORE signing up. I’d like to discuss amongst ourselves which day of the week would work best!! Or if you have any questions at all, shoot me a message!! It’s first come, first serve so let me know soon!

(PS – CRI has an official “beer cart” that they bring out after each practice. They are INCREDIBLE)

Hope to see you on the water and of course, on the Hill!
